Revolving Inward

Words by Kevin Courtney

The mind, by its very nature, moves.

From the moment we wake up until our head hits the pillow, we are immersed in a sea of sensory stimulation that propels the mind into action. There are so many things constantly drawing our minds outward: sights, sounds, and smells around us, the tug of sophisticated algorithms, the good old-fashioned analog experience of living a complex life in a complex time. Life spins, and the mind spins with it. The centrifugal force of this movement can become so strong that the mind loses its sense of center. Wisdom traditions suggest that, unchecked, this phenomenon can lead to a mind that has lost its crucial connection to source.
