Ajna

The Vortex of Mysticism

Words by Sue Hunt

Ajna is located between the eyebrows and is often depicted in Buddhist and Hindu art as the third eye space in the middle of the forehead. This is an artistic reminder that Ajna is capable of seeing beyond the senses into all spaces and times: the entire wheel of samsara (the cycle of karma). In human form, the voice of the intuition is the language of Ajna. Ajna, opening doors that lead into worlds of color, whimsy, parallel universes, the wheels of karma in all planes of human existence, the melding of past, present and future, the brightly spinning wheel of cause and effect.

The physical touch point for the Ajna chakra is the pineal gland, a sacred location in the body across many ancient Eastern and Western spiritual traditions. In Western astrology the pineal gland is associated with the zodiac sign of Pisces, the last sign in the zodiac, which illustrates the spiritual maturity needed to deeply connect to Ajna. The pineal gland regulates circadian rhythm—the body’s innate wisdom to sense the transition from light to dark—and secretes the hormone melatonin, a powerful neurotransmitter that governs the sacred transition in the body between waking and sleeping states.
